What is back pain?

The spine consists of 33 vertebrae that connect together to form the bony canal, which in turn protects and supports the spinal cord, and through the spaces between the vertebrae small nerves pass in and out of the spinal cord. The function of these nerves is to transmit messages between the brain and the rest of the body. Pain occurs when these nerves are compressed or irritated. In most cases, this condition is caused by damage to the disc, often called a herniated, protruding or slipped disc.

Another potential source of low back pain is the posterior joints of the spine. These joints help the spine move smoothly when they are properly aligned. When the normal position of these joints is altered, symptoms manifest as pain. Cases have shown that people with chronic low back pain compensate for the imbalance in the spine by engaging other muscles that are not used in certain movements. If the spine does not return to its ideal position, normal daily activities will accelerate the wear and tear on the spine, leading to vertebral erosion.
