What is spinal stenosis?

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of one or more canals or a narrowing between spaces in the spine – often seen in the neck or lower back. This narrowing can lead to pressure on the spinal cord or nerves that branch from the compressed areas. Spinal stenosis is more common in men and women over the age of 50. However, it may appear in younger people who are born with spinal stenosis or who have a spinal injury.

Spinal stenosis can cause cramps, pain, or numbness in the legs, back, neck, shoulders, or arms; loss of sensation in the limbs and sometimes in its advanced state, it may cause issues with bladder or bowel function.
